First off I'd like to Thank The Trews for inviting me to their show @ The Town Ballroom and providing me with a photo pass. I've never been to The Town Ballroom before and I must say it's a great venue to see a rock show! Great rock club vibe. All the sightlines are excellent and the giant video screens showing the band are a nice touch! Experiencing The Trews for the first time in Buffalo at The Town Ballroom was awesome, to say the least!

For those of you out there who don't know who The Trews are (Where have you been?...JK!) you will soon! The Trews are a tried and true rock and roll band from Niagara Falls, Canada who are blazing a rock trail to greatness with every show they play. No music samples or loops here, just five musicians singing and playing their hearts out. The Trews play rock and roll like it should be played, with conviction, talent, power and lots of volume. The near capacity crowd in the T.B. loudly welcomed the band, enjoyed every single note they played and cheered on the band for the entire show. The Trews could do no wrong and their catchy songs whipped the crowd up into a rock and roll frenzy! The Trews provided an exciting, unforgettable rock and roll experience for all those lucky enough to be in attendance.

The Trews opened the show at The Town Ballroom with the uptempo song "Misery Loves Company" from their latest album "Hope & Ruin". Next came the crowd pleasing radio hit "Not Ready To Go" from their debut album "House of Ill Fame". The set also included "So She's Leaving", "Paranoid Freak" and the acoustic ballad "Sing Your Heart Out". "Love Is The Real Thing" included a segue way into the famed Elvis song "Suspicious Minds". "Highway Of Heroes" was a salute to our soldiers followed by "I Can't Stop Laughing" and "Tired Of Waiting". The encores "Ishmael And Maggie" & "Yearning", which also included a segue way into the classic song "Stand By Me", closed out the show.

The Trews play catchy, hook driven, hard driving rock music. One or two listens to The Trews music and you're singing along with the chorus. The Trews write the kind of melodies that stick in your head long after you're done listening to the music. The Trews consist of vocalist/guitarist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, drummer Sean Dalton and the latest addition, keyboardist Jeff Heisholt.

Storefront crashes

I know that this blog is supposed to be about music and stuff like that but I felt a strong urge to comment on a somewhat strange and reoccuring thing that's been happening alot lately in the WNY area, Storefront crashes. Since the occurences of drivers crashing through storefronts is on the rise lately (15 crashes since August) and they have resulted is a few fatalities, I wanted to share a few thoughts my wife & I had on the issue.
My wife, Maria suggested that the spirit of someone who was adversely affected by a crash (maybe someone who was killed..?) may be possessing and taking over drivers and making them crash to gain their revenge. Like some sort of weird, paranormal movie plot.
This is an interesting thought to say the least...

I had a couple of thoughts of my own to share.
Some of the end results of the crashes may be good and at the same time bad for some parts of the local economy, the insurance rates go up for the crashed vehicles and local contractors are being put to work to fix the damages caused by the vehicles. However the places that the people crash into may be adversely affected because they may or may not be able to afford to pay out the deductibles on their property insurance to fix the damages. The insurance companies involved will probably have to pay out monies above and beyond the deductibles to cover the damage. My thoughts are that the good and bad costs may even themselves out in the end...?
However, there may be some sort of hidden, convoluted connection between the bad economy, people needing to make money to survive and the positive results the crashes have on certain types of businesses. Don't get me wrong, I'm not accusing anybody of anything, it's just a fleeting thought I had while I was driving home from open mic last night.

If New York State passes some new law or bill that requires concrete posts or barriers to be installed in front of stores to prevent these types of accidents, the businesses that install these types of barriers will benefit tremendously. A new law requiring these barriers should be seriously considered since a few people have lost their lives as a end result of a few of these crashes. It should only take 1 death to pass a new bill or law, how many more people have to die before something is done by local lawmakers? Concrete posts or barriers may not be enough to stop vehicles! You may as well build a brick or concrete wall, and even this may not be enough to stop vehicles moving at high rates of speed! Better yet, why not just dig a moat between your business and any nearby cars, fill it with water, surround it with barbed wire and put in a couple of hungry crocodiles so if an incompetent driver or two, drives into your moat, either on purpose or by accident, they can be eaten up by a crocodile and removed from society thereby making our nearby highways and byways safer places to drive for everyone...
(Just kidding, folks!)

Cell phones and texting maybe to blame, if someone is too busy talking on their cell phone or texting while driving, they are dangerously distracted and aren't paying enough attention to how fast, where they're vehicle is headed and how long it will take to come to a complete stop before hitting something. Yesterday a 19 year old girl was to blame for a crash, was she texting or talking on her cell phone? It's a good question to ask, I would be interested in the answer. Last I heard cell phone use and texting while driving is illegal in New York State.

Overly busy storefronts could be a valid cause, all the signage that stores put up to draw the public in can be a distraction. If someone is too busy reading a loud, colorful, distracting storefront sign while they're driving up to a store they plan on entering, they could be negatively distracted, which may lead to an accident.

Drivers who are over the age of 65 may be lacking the safe driving skills they once had. A 74 year old woman was to blame for the other local accident that happened yesterday. There have been some rumblings by the general public for at least the past 10 years or so that licensed drivers over the age of 65 should be required to take a driving test to reassess their driving skills. The results of a test like this would determine driving competency therefore allowing competent drivers over the age of 65 to continue driving. Uncompetent drivers who fail the test would and should permanently lose their driving privileges as a result.

Any prescription medications and the effects they have on drivers, young and old, should be taken into consideration. If a new driver fails their driving test as a result of some medication they may be taking they shouldn't be allowed to drive.
On the other hand, if there are any seniors out there who are currently driving and they're driving skills are adversely affected because of advanced age as well as being negatively affected by a prescribed medication, in my humble opinion, they are an accident waiting to happen.

I've also heard some people say that the drivers to blame are at fault because they are confusing the gas pedal with the brake pedal, in my opinion this a lame excuse. If this was a valid excuse people would be crashing into things like other drivers, pedestrians and places of business all the time! Deadly crashes would be taking place 24/7, night and day, virtually nonstop on busy streets, open roads and parking lots all over the world!

Whatever the case may be I think the general public should consider the proximity between where they sit in a public restaurant and how close their seat is to a public parking lot or street. They should also consider how close their seat is to the front of the building and how close it is to moving vehicles. If a car came barreling toward you while inside a public place would you or better yet, could you be hit by the vehicle? I realize that if God says it's your time to go you won't have much of a choice, but with all the accidents that have been happening lately and especially if young children are involved you may want to reconsider where you may be sitting the next time you patronize a local restaurant or business. If you have to move to a safer seat or booth to feel more comfortable, by all means please do so, considering that these types of accidents on happening on a daily basis your life and the lives of your children may depend on it.

Buffalo's own Blues and Rockin' Soul diva Yvonne Schmidt is back with her second solo release, "Foolproof," on the Wild In Blue Productions label. Produced by Grammy award-winner Tom Hambridge (Susan Tedeschi, Buddy Guy, Lynyrd Synyrd), and featuring seven Hambridge-penned originals as well as three carefully-selected covers, this ten-track album is the perfect vehicle to showcase Yvonne's roots-y, but polished vocal style.

Having worked with Hambridge and company on her first album, 2002's Nothing But Blue, Yvonne was more than ready when it came time to record with Hambridge again. As much as she loves to record, it is the stage that she really calls "home," musically speaking. She has been a fixture on the Buffalo regional scene since the early 90's, and having the chance to work with world-class musicians, and bring her own music to Blues fans has been a goal that she has been happy to obtain. I just picked this up @ The Record Baron (the only place that still sells cassette tapes, as far as I know...) because my new (used) Van doesnt play CD's only tapes...darn it. Anyway I had the pleasure to play and record with these guys back in 91. I miss Angst. I believe The Carcass and Panic are still in town, never met Deep.

This is basically a tell all book about all the inner workings of the business side as well as the musical side of The Jimi Hendrix Experience from an insider's point of view. The book also goes into detail about all the legal hassles that Noel went through to try and get his fair share of the Hendrix pie after he died.

This book is a comprehensive, unique book that covers all of Jimi Hendrix's musical output before and after he died. It documents the 650 or so official and unofficial studio and live recordings that have Jimi Hendrix's name on them up until 1998. It also covers Jimi's TV appearances, tour dates and has a Jimi Hendrix song index that has over 4000 songs!

The index tells who played what on each song, what year they were recorded and where they were recorded.

Chances are if you have a Hendrix bootleg you can find out all the info about it in this book. What's sad is that according to this book Jimi doesn't even play on alot of the unofficial, unreleased music.

Includes some never before released live songs from the legendary venue, a venue Hendrix headlined 3 straight days in a row in 1968. Also a Hendrix reissue of a out of print record since 1974 "In The West" has finally been rereleased in CD form. Any Hendrix fan who hasn't heard the 13 minute and 12 second live version of Red House from 1969 that's on "In The West" should be ashamed, one of the best ever. Although if I'm not mistaken this version is on the 2000 purple 4 CD box set as well.

9/15/11 Update: darn it all banned again. oh well I sometimes wish we could go back to the pre-internet days when people had more common sense and people based their opinions on their fellow man on how they were treated in person. (Remember those days? When people used the phone to communicate instead of using non-verbal, web-based types of communication?) Instead, people form positive or negative opinions and judge people today on what they may or may not write in a tweet, text or on a public website. They may never, ever meet that person face to face. I think that's sad and I'm not a social butterfly by any stretch of the imagination.

9/9/11 Update: Recent comments have been removed per request out of a showing of respect to a certain individual, that is the only reason why the comments were removed.
For those of you who may take what I or what someone else may have posted about you or your band seriously, if you think I care what you may think of me, here's a clue, I don't. If you want to prejudge, blackball or not play music with me because of something I may have posted in the past on a website than that's ultimately your choice and your problem. Musicians with closed minds in any form are not good musicians in my book. The fact is that I'm a very easy going person and I work well with others...Especially in a musical context! I have opinions and I have no problem expressing them in person or online. After reading what others posted I thought, hey this website is kinda cool, so I decided to post a few things and I thought this cool site would allow me to express my opinions, after all it is music related website. Musicians (usually) have very strong opinions. I thought, let me join in and express my opinions for the world to see. Unfortunately a select few chose to be "the voice of reason" and decided to complain about some posts of mine that they decided they didn't like, I'm assuming that these greedy cry babies made some monetary donations to the site so the admins decided to listen and obey. So the tampering and deleting by the admins began and ultimately I decided to no longer participate, end of story. Some of the other members on the site were quite rude and negative toward me but I never took any posts aimed toward me serious. WTF would I care if some anonymous or unanonymous idiot decided to post a negative comment about me? I have more important things to worry about. I never once complained and asked for a negative comment aimed toward me to be removed. My thoughts are that other members decided that their "(our) online presence should be a top priority!" and in order to save face they "(we) would complain!" and have a post of mine deleted...How lame is that?... "He shouldn't be allowed to write that! Who does he think he is!". Get real. Your concern about what I or what someone else may post about you or your band is laughable and shows a lack of confidence in your ability to handle any kind of negative criticism, a lack of confidence in your band and it's marketability and also reflects a shallow, fragile ego that wants everything to be A-OK all of the time. Sorry that will never happen. Above and beyond what I may think the world is a cruel, cold place where negativity and back stabbing run rampant, Especially in the (fairly) small and jaded world of the Buffalo music scene!...All I can say is what goes around comes right back around to bite you in the ass.

9/8/11: I've recently been banned from an Open Forum local music website. This site claims to have open forums but if the admins don't like what you write it will be deleted, moved or tampered with in any way they see fit.
They will also reveal who you are whenever they feel the need, so anonymity is really not an option. An open forumed website should remain open!, users should be able to express individual, controversial opinions or obvious truths without the fear of these posts being deleted and anonymity should be a given. Betraying any users trust without recourse or tampering with posts will undoubtedly earn this site a bad reputation resulting in less site traffic.
The only other time that I've ever heard of people being banned from Open Public forumed website is when some famous radio celebrities said they banned people they didn't know from their sites because they always posted curse words and disparaging comments about everyone from everywhere (you know like graffiti on a bathroom wall) on all of their posts. I never did that.

To the admins of this site: According to First Amendment Freedom of expression is the American way. Playing it safe and picking and choosing what you want to keep and delete is ultimately a lame policy, resulting in a boring, nothing happening, cliquey, juvenile site. Which it pretty much is now anyway.

I don't regret and I will never apologize for anything I ever posted on the site in truth or in jest. I get the feeling that if you donate to the site and you complain to the admins you will ultimately gain some control over content. Keep the donations rolling in and you can post whatever you want and if you don't donate I believe your posts and identity will be up for grabs.

I've always been a big fan of Ozzy and Black Sabbath. I especially love the Randy Rhoads, Blizzard Of Oz Ozzy stuff. I've also loved the 1st photo in this series of photos I've posted here since I first seen it way back when in glorious B&W. So I decided to do a little online searching and I found a few cool photos to post along with it along the same theme. Randy Rhoads may have been small in stature but he was a giant talent on the electric guitar. A friend of mine once told me that Randy's playing is over rated but anyone who knows anything about playing a guitar knows that Randy's playing was innovative, exciting and instantly recognizable. Randy had a unique style and sound all his own. This post is in recognition of the new rereleases of the 2 orginal Blizzard Of Oz records, each rerelease has new extra added bonus material. As soon as I heard about these new rereleases I instantly bought the Diary Of A Madman double CD. This double CD set contains an entire CD of never before released Blizzard Of Oz tour live material. These rereleases have a very interesting back story which I plan on elaborating on real soon...
Now my only wish is that someone in the Quiet Riot camp will finally come to their senses and rerelease the 1st 2 orginal Q.R. records in the USA. These records were only released in Japan.
These 2 records feature Randy on guitar and were released before Randy auditioned for Ozzys band. You can occasionally find these records in CD form on ebay.

Ansley Court was a cool, rockin' alternative band from Buffalo that was gigging and recording in the 90's. I had the pleasure of seeing them play live a couple of times and also had the pleasure of working w/Joe (JOFO 70) while he recorded his solo album in the Sidway building. Last I heard Joe moved to NYC. Ansley Court was an extremely talented bunch of original songwriters, their sound could be called alternative rock but it is a unique, eclectic blend of many genres. The overall sound of "jade heart bleeder" is very cool. Lots of interesting sounds going on to entertain the ears. I think A.S. was way ahead of the curve and not your average, ordinary band by any means.

After all this time I still enjoy listening to "jade heart bleeder".

Buffalo NY Sports Curse

The Buffalo NY Sports Curse. Fact or Fiction?...

I was recently told by a co-worker of mine that there was a curse placed on all Buffalo NY based Major League (currently NHL & NFL) Sports teams. This is why the Buffalo Bills have never won a Super Bowl and this is also why the Buffalo Sabres have never won a Stanley Cup. Consider the championship history our 2 teams have had and this curse legend seems to make sense, at least it does to me. I think the fact that Buffalo once had a NBA team here and lost it applies to this curse as well. I dont consider indoor lacrosse, football, soccer or triple A baseball to be major league sports teams.
Supposedly this curse was initiated by a lone Indian runner who was participating in a sanctioned foot race in the Buffalo area. This race was held in the early part of the 20th century,
somewhere around the 20's and 30's.
Legend has it that this lone Indian runner, who was racing against a field of white/caucasian competitors, was purposely tripped and couldnt finish the race. Upon being tripped the Indian immediately placed a curse upon on all the major league sports teams in the Buffalo area stating that they would never win a championship unless they were Indian owned and operated.

This story may come off as rascist or racially biased so I feel that I must state that Im not a rascist in any way, shape or form.
I thought this was an interesting story to post considering Im a major NHL hockey fan, NFL football not so much considering the way the Bills have been playing lately.
When you consider the history the Bills and Sabres have had in losing championship games it seems like we need an excuse as to why we lost, someone or something to blame besides our beloved players, this legend seems to fit that reasoning perfectly.
So for me at least, this story will always be in the back of my mind until we win the big one.
Besides the fact that weve lost every time, consider the Sabres '75 fog game, 99's No Goal! and our 4 consecutive Super Bowl appearances. Our championship history is interesting to say the least and can be spun in any number of ways so I guess you can say Im putting my own little twist on the stories to make them seem that much more interesting.

I believe this is The Queens Of The Stone Age's 1st release. I picked this up after not being able to find the Ozzy Tribute CD in a couple of diff stores. Q.O.T.S.A. is a band that derived from Kyuss, and the singer/guitarist recently recorded with Them Crooked Vultures. The kind of music on this CD can be called "stoner metal" or "alternative metal", at least that's what the music is being categorized as these days by the media. I first heard this CD being blasted on a t-shirt factory loud speaker system back in the 90's, a system that actually caught on fire while Def Leppard's Pyromania was being played, I'll never, ever forget that memory!

I want to thank Jason for turning me on to this great band way back then. Along with the CD cover being unforgetable the music is heavy, loud and aggressive...right up my alley.

Anyway, the original CD art was Censored and I've posted the original CD art along with the new CD art. Being a fan of Q.O.T.S.A. I couldn't resist posting this artwork, not only because it's cool and sexy but the music is cool, sexy and kick ass. Q.O.T.S.A. is alternative metal at it's very best.

Had the privilege to catch Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings live at The Falls a few weeks back, Sharon Jones is an old school Motown, R&B, Funk, Soul inspired singer who is keeping that style of music alive with her CD's and live appearances. Seeing them play live was refreshing because I havent seen anyone do this kinda stuff live or on TV in quite awhile. Bought this CD in support.

Hi Friend; This Friday the 13th, 10:00pm at Vizzi's in Kenmore, NY, I will debut my new CD "Ditch Diggers." Ditch Diggers is a collection of blues standards that I have loved playing over years. They offer instrumental and vocal chops. For a while I considered calling the CD "Blues Virtuosos" but that is sort of an oxy-moron, plus it doesn't really fit the working class type of listener that attends my performances. I went with Ditch Diggers after talking to an ex-bouncer from one of the old blues clubs I used to play in my twenties. His Dad dug ditches for a living, it was honest hard work but he had pride in what he did and earned a respectable living. That said it all to me, blues is honest hard working music that's good for the soul. That sort of vulnerability is what the style is all about. I walked over to a table with my wife and friends and I started to tell them about my decision to title the CD "Ditch Diggers," at the exact moment that I said the name, the Buffalo Sabres scored the over time winner in game 5 against Philadelphia. (Yes America it's true, I'm a Sabres fan and hockey addict). That sealed the deal, the only thing missing was a Sabres Stanley Cup. I thought it was (Finally!) about time to properly recognize one of the main reasons why I think Hey You won the Top Tribute Band B.M.Award in 2010, the very same award she's holding in her pretty little hands. It's really too bad they only give out one award per band because after you read this blog you'll find out why she deserves to have and hold a B.M.Award all her own. Making it seem almost easy Maria tirelessly and diligently pounded the pavement for said band in 2010. For those of you out there who don't know what "pounding the pavement" means it means putting in the required hours and hours of placing cold phone calls, (A "cold" phone call means to make a phone call to a person and/or place you've never called before and asking to speak with the person in charge) trying to establish the right contact along with making all the always necessary follow up calls to secure venues and going to said venues to meet the owners and having to impress upon them the fact that they need to have her band in their venue, not only to expose and promote their venues, but to expose and promote her band in a positive and highly convincing manner. The end result of all her hard work and effort was highly succesful! Maria secured several high profile venues all over the greater W.N.Y. region. Maria also secured several sponsorships for said band in 2010 among these were the Local Edge phonebook, Skunkpost.com and The Buffalo Drum Outlet. Can you say Marketing Genius?!... All of these efforts went seamlessly along with the difficult task of learning singing parts, practicing these parts and performing all of her background singing parts (Can you say The Great Gig In The Sky? I sure as hell can!!!) for all of said bands performances in 2010! Add all of these efforts up and add to these taking care of a home, family and a full time job and you've got a great person with a tireless work ethic who deserves all the thanks and recognition that anyone could ever give. Her efforts have seemingly gone unoticed until now! Way To Go, Maria Militello! Great Job!Never overbearing Maria also knows how to sing background vocals with precision and finesse, something she did tirelessly, effortlessly and solo for H.Y. the last 5 months of 2010. Singing background vocals requires a great musical ear to first learn the background vocal parts and second, to be able execute them live, laying back and coming in when the music requires. The timeless quality of Pink Floyd's music speaks for itself, if you're a casual fan and/or an avid listener of Pink Floyd there are many P.F. tribute bands out there to enjoy on every part of the globe, it's not a new or unique concept by any means. Go on Youtube and you'll see what I mean.

Maria was an integral and important part of Buffalo's own version. She put in many tireless, thankless hours helping out during her tenure with H.Y. They will never sound the same without Maria and will never, ever be marketed and promoted by anyone as good as when Maria was promoting and marketing the band. That is why, like it or not, believe it or not, Maria Militello is a Marketing Genius.

On a side note, their current drummer, Ron Lee, is the most solid, hard hitting and exciting percussionist I've ever seen them perform with and I want to say Thank You to Bill for letting me sit in at a gig awhile ago.

When/where did the band form? The band was formed 5 years ago by Lanee and John after performing in a cover acoustic trio for several years all around WNY.

I recently brought this CD to a friends house to listen to and I thought he would be interested to listen to it because he's a big Ian Gillan fan, but he took 1 look at the cover and refused to listen to it, furthermore he said if I put it in his CD player he would break it!

It's only music!

So having a back story to write about I thought I would post the CD cover for all the world to see.

"Born Again" is the only CD that Sabbath recorded with Ian Gillan, my favorite song is "Zero The Hero" which I was excited to play for my friend. I enjoy this CD, it has a musically and vocally different sound from the Ozzy/Dio Sab stuff.

Anyway, I saw Sabbath in Buffalo at The Aud when they toured supporting this record, Quiet Riot opened up, great show, I wish this lineup would record again.

Gaia Miranda "All in Time" CD Review

"All In Time" CD Review, before I start I 1st want to Thank Gaia for submitting her CD for this blog for me to review. Thank You, Gaia!

The 1st track "All In Time" has a really great intro, I enjoy listening to the skillfully fingerpicked acoustic guitar intro, the song has a nice, flowing, melancholy feel to it, it reminds me of a Fleetwood Mac type of song but it still has a unique sound and feel all it's own. "All In Time" contains some very well played lead guitar playing provided by Pat Travers. Pat Travers has been entertaining audiences and releasing top quality Rock n Roll music since the 70's. (See Bio.) "All In Time" is a great opening track.
"Heart of Mine" highlights the unique vocal stylings and talented, excellent, acoustic guitar playing of Gaia Miranda. Her voice is reminiscent of K.D. Lang and Tracy Chapman at times. This track has the classic sound and feel of a song you may have heard on FM radio, or maybe even AM radio, in the 70's. Think "Soft Rock" in a James Taylor type vein.
The 3rd track "Keep on Runnin" is an uptempo Rock n Roll song with a unique and somewhat mesmerizing electric guitar intro which doesnt last very long before the song bursts into a full-out Rockin' tune, this song features some excellent lead guitar playing by Eron Chambers. (See Bio.)
"You Know it's Spring" is another nice, melancholy, mellow song that features Gaia's unique and soaring vocal phrasing accompanied by another, well executed and well played acoustic guitar track.
The 5th song, "The Lone Zone" is another uptempo rocker that features some powerful drumming by Sean Shannon and more excellent lead guitar by Eron Chambers. The guitar pick scratches sound cool on this rockin' track.

"The Sun is High" is reminiscent of "Heart of Mine" and "You Know It's Spring" featuring a solo Gaia on acoustic guitar and vocals.
The final track, "Sweetest Part of Heaven (RoughCut)" strikes me as a Christmas ballad for a former or lost love or maybe a tribute to a lost family member...either way it's a great closing track featuring Gaia on electric guitar and vocals.
