Empire Of One CD review

CD Review for Empire Of One:

At first glance, Empire of One seems like the type of band that could easy be seen on the Top 40 charts of today. Even though you will be sure to see them there one day, they go much deeper than that. The first track off of their self-titled EP “Empire of One”, evokes visions of national bands like Theory of a Dead Man and U2. However ‘If I Let Myself Dream’ has an unexpected ska vibe to it that is very pleasant to hear. The second track entitled ‘Roam’ is a longing ballad featuring hopeful guitar parts and emotional vocals. This track is definitely one to check out. The EP ends with ‘I’m Still Here’, a catchy, alternative tune that highlights the feel of the album. The song’s despairing lyrics are offset by rhythmic, upbeat guitar parts. Which is a very refreshing way to wrap up this EP.

Empire of One has a sound all their own. They have created and EP of songs with big name influences you’ll definitely recognize. Their melodies and lyrics could transverse any boundary. This is one band that would be sure to turn heads in any bar.

KISS atop the Empire State Building

This post is dedicated to the victim that was shot near the Empire State Building today by a disgruntled ex-employee. The perpetrator was fatally shot by police but nine other innocent people were hurt in the process.
At this point, with all the random shootings that have been happening, it's obvious to me that stricter gun laws should be imposed ASAP.
I know that guns don't shoot people, people shoot people but there are way too many innocents of all ages being shot in random gun violence.
New and stricter gun laws should be put into place NOW! to avoid guns from getting into the hands of the kind of people that inflict gun violence. Too many innocent, hard working people, people like you and me, of all ages, are dying.
How many more people have to die before the lawmakers wake up and decide to do something about gun control in this country?...

The Dirty Heads "Cabin by the Sea" CD review

The Dirty Heads

"Cabin by the Sea" CD review

From reggae and ska to hard core and intelligent hip hop, this amazing new CD from The Dirty Heads is a trip to listen to – taking us on a stylistic journey down the California coast. The package I received contained not only the CD, but a DVD chronicling the making of the record. From listening to the music, and watching the entertaining DVD, I was able to discern the following:

1)      The Dirty Heads smoke a ton of reefer, drink a lot of cold beer and good whiskey, hang outside at bonfires, and play some of the best damn music I have heard in a long time.
2)      They have a fucking riot while they do #1.

The band, from Huntington Beach, California, was founded in 1996, by singer Jared “Dirty J” Watson, and guitarist / singer Dustin “Duddy B” Bushnell. They had a long road to success, but in 2010 hit it big with an alternative hit, “Lay Me Down”. That song featured vocals and guitar from Rome Ramirez of Sublime w/ Rome.

Their new release, Cabin by the Sea, contains the song “Spread Too Thin” another independent hit, heard locally on CFNY, 102.1.  After the intro (Arrival), the band gets right down to business with the acoustic flavored title track, (Cabin by the Sea) weaving from fun Beach Boy melodies to alcohol induced raps. Fender Rhodes piano, extra percussion, and great acoustic guitar work make this a unique song. On the song “Disguise”, horn flourishes meld with Duddy B’s rapping, before Dirty J comes in with an entertaining chorus. Duddy B comes back with a Spanish style acoustic guitar solo, and then the harmonies come in. This is great stuff, well written, entertaining, and well produced.

The two highlight songs for me on this recording are “Smoke Rings” and “Mongo Push”, two of the most imaginative and driving hip hop songs I have ever heard. The featured rappers (The Funky Homosapien and Rome) on these two songs add a hard edge to this record that I really love. At one point, Rome boasts while rapping, “If you do not clap for me, probably you’re amputee!” The other standout songs for me are the reggae flavored “Your Love” featuring Kymani Marley, and “We Will Rise”, an outstanding reggae anthem for 2012.  This record winds through your brain like a van full of stoned twenty somethings winds through a Southern California highway. So burn some tree, get your head around a bush, burn some picket fences, and grab this awesome CD…You will not be disappointed!

Rock On,

Bud Redding

Out To Lunch "No One Left Behind"

Out To Lunch

MesaBluemoon recording artists Out to Lunch launch
No One Left Behind--North American Tour

Pushing the depths of the underground jazz scene, cutting edge New York City-based Out to Lunch will be releasing its third album, No One Left Behind, on one of the finest indie record labels, MesaBluemoon Recordings.  Launching the record on the hallowed stage of the Blue Note, August 3, 2012, and touring it extensively through North American, No One Left Behind fuses dance music with improvisational imagination creating a sound that hits both the mind and feet.  Tracks such as “In Da House” and “It's a Jungle Out There” move effortlessly from the world of house to break beat, while the title track No One Left Behind and Bagga Onions tip their hat to dub and funk.

Bandleader David Levy has outdone himself once again on Out to Lunch’s third release.  This time drawing on influences from as far as Ghana and Nepal, yet as well keeping it local through using the vocal genius of Damon Cicero Scott, whom Levy discovered busking in the subways of New York.  Along with his improvisation forays on woodwinds (saxophone, bass clarinet and bansuri flute), Levy also demonstrates his deft mastery of electronics through his manipulation of Ableton Live.

The Dirty Heads "Cabin By The Sea" CD Art

“It starts with the title. No matter where you are or what’s going on, when you hear this record, we want to transport you to this place, this ‘Cabin by the Sea.’”, says Heads front man Jared “Dirty J” Watson of the new album Cabin by the Sea.

For the SoCal rock/reggae/hip-hop band, Cabin represents more than just good vibes. Its the culmination of years of hard work and endless touring, and a chance to refine and improve on their breakthrough, 2008’s Any Port in the Storm.  That’s not an easy act to follow – their debut album featured one of the decade’s biggest rock singles, “Lay Me Down” (which spent eleven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Chart, a record for an independent release and more than any single that year by anyone, including The Black Keys, Kings of Leon and 30 Seconds to Mars) and a shout-out in Rolling Stone as one of year’s best new bands.

But the Heads knew better things lay ahead. “Last time was our first time in the studio, working with a producer,” says Watson. “This time out, we nailed it. We trimmed the fat and got the sound we were always going for.”

Thank You Gunner and The Dirty Heads!
