Carina & The Six String Preacher - Buffalo, NY

Pics are from a recent performance in Williamsville.

Pics by Joe Tell.

Carina and the Six String Preacher will be performing at the Lewiston Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 27 at the Lewiston Peace Garden Courtyard from 7:15pm to 9:15pm. Complete schedule above. Newest youtube video below...

Carina & The Six String Preacher - Why You So Wild Crocodile? CD review by Joe Tell.

The first track, Forgot About Me, kicks off with a slow and sexy bossa nova/samba musical groove. A groove that's heavily infused with jazz. Carina's vocals send a strong message. She strongly suggest to forget about her, but her breathy delivery has the opposite effect, you are further drawn into her tender musical trappings. This song would fit in perfectly on any 50's B Movie soundtrack. The guitar lays back until the very end. A heavy guitar that sounds like a keyboard punctuates the music and takes the song out.
Youtube link https://youtu.be/c2yFVXDLDmQ
The guitar and drums of Cheap Perfume come in first and lay down a powerful groove. A perfect groove for Carina to sing along with and drop her unique vocal inflections on top of. Some perfectly timed stops really make the vocals pop as Carina delivers another standout performance.
Any Buffalonian who's been stuck in their house after a huge snow storm will relate to Cabin Fever. Cabin Fever delivers another jazz tour de force complete with a outstanding guitar solo by the Six String Preacher. Once again Carina's passionate and sensual vocal styling's really shine through on Cabin Fever. https://youtu.be/7C25i01lK4Q
A Man I Could Love combines rock, calypso and jazz styling's into a great and unique sounding song. This is my favorite song on Why You So Wild Crocodile? Drummer John Brady's performance on this song is outstanding. The opening lyric is haunting and it really has the tendency to stick inside your head. Once the opening line draws to a close the calypso beat kicks in and Carina displays her versatility by singing and scatting over the jumpy rhythm.
Cry Baby is a lesson in percussion. Carina's tick tock countdown and the Six String Preacher's percussive playing provide the rhythm. Carina's vocals glide over the music and provide the melody that flows through the song.
The enormous talents of Carina & The Six String Preacher come together to deliver a new and unique spin on traditional jazz stylings. Their take on jazz results in a sound that is very cool, sexy and hip.

Andy Irvine Diggin' That Funky Blues CD Review

Andy Irvine Diggin' that Funky Blues CD Review

Joseph Militello, Yahoo Contributor Network
Before I begin this review I must thank world renowned bassist and recording artist Andy Irvine for graciously donating his newest CD to me to review. Andy is a Rochester, N.Y. native who recently gave a great in-house bass guitar clinic at Music City in Buffalo, N.Y. Warwick bass guitars sponsored the clinic.
For those of you unfamiliar with Andy Irvine here's a brief history of his music career. Andy played on punk rock legend G.G. Allin's last recording and Andy has recorded with an impressive list of recording artists' including Eden Brent, Pee Wee Ellis, Eddie Turner, John Wesley, Lucky Peterson, Tiny Tim, and the bands Beanstalk and Clang.
Andy displayed his exceptional bass playing techniques on his favorite fret-less and fretted Warwick electric basses at the informative bass clinic. Andy also offered some unique insight on the manufacturing of Warwick bass guitars. Andy closed out the clinic with a very interesting and informative question and answer session.

Special thanks also goes out to Vincent James from Music City for providing tickets to the in-store Andy Irvine bass guitar clinic. Music City is located on 3236 Main Street in Buffalo NY. Visit Music City online at www.musiccitybuffalo.com. You can see, hear and read more about all of the great instruments and upcoming in-store music clinics Music City on the store's website.

On with the review, Andy Irvines second CD release is titled Diggin' That funky Blues. Andy released his first solo effort entitled Soul Clap in 2009. Diggin' That Funky Blues features 10 rocking songs that combines elements of soul, funk, rock and low down, dirty blues. He composed, arranged, and produced, the album himself. In addition, Andy played many of the instruments and sang on 4 of the tracks. Lead vocalists' Johnny O and Lionel Young handled vocal duties as well.

The first track, Them Nasty Blues features vocalist Johnny O singing on top of a low down, dirty, nasty, blues track that features some excellent, blues, guitar, playing.
Andy takes over on vocal duties for Call Me Cornbread. This track is a funky, rhythm and blues romp that would make even James Brown proud.
Can't Slow Down is an uptempo, blues rock, number that will get your feet tapping along with the rocking beat. This song features some rocking Tenor Sax played by Toby Hopper and great backing vocals provided by Kay Irvine.
The 4th song is a very cool instrumental that kicks off with some melodic bass soloing by Andy, the song then switches gears into an uptempo rocker, Andy continues soloing throughout, showing off his excellent soloing skills on the 5 - string bass. When I See You - In The Twilight is my favorite song on Diggin' That Funky Blues.
The title track is a great, funky, blues, song that will be sure to get your booty shaking to the beat. Andy takes a ferocious popping and slapping solo on the bass, showing his versatility and skill on the bass.
The slow rocker, I Awoke From A Dream, features an excellent bass solo. Andy's ripping and aggressive solo playing proves that the bass can carry a solo just as well as a guitar can, especially when Andy's soloing! Great Job Andy!
The closing track, One More Show, features some great harmonica playing by Al Chesis. This song reminds me of a classic, blues, roadhouse song with it's hard driving tempo, killer, blues rock, feel and rocking bass groove. Great closing track!

The Vincent James Explosion - Blown

2/12/2010 Flyer, Thank you Vince!

Blown CD art.

Photo by Joe Tell from the Central Park Grill.

Blown CD Review by Joe Tell.

On Track 1 Blown both the Guitar and Bass make their presence instantly known, I really dig the bass sound and the guitar sweeps and fast blues/metal lead breaks. The psychedelic middle pt. is great and the bass/drums stacatto fills @ the end, blew me away.
Big Poppi has some Awesum! Jeff Beck inspired soundz.
Merrimac St. is a pure Jazz/Sex groovefest.
Love Is The Word starts off mellow 'n jazzy then, The VJX turn it in and out into a rock inspired throw down with some blazing rock solos and a bass solo thrown in @ the end for good measure.
Track 6 is a funky rocker thru 'n thru with some interesting sounding sample trax which add to the track rather than detract from it.
Naurel strikes me as a Jeff Beck, melancholy Guitar instrumental, which I really, really enjoyed being a big, big J.B. fan myself. The title name may be an interesting take on someones name?...
City Slicker has some inspired Stevie Ray Vaughan type soloing exposing yet another skill Vincent James has mastered and obviously enjoys playing.
Any serious fan/student of the Guitar should check out this CD. Funk, Blues and Rock fans will not be disappointed by this CD.

All The Vincent James Explosion releases are available Music City, tell 'em JoTell sent ya!

Revelation by The Vincent James Explosion

The Vincent James Explosion is an innovative, explosive, outstanding, accomplished & polished trio of musicians who mix Rock/Jazz/Jazz Fusion/Blues/Funk/Acid Jazz Blues styles with a little bit of vocals thrown in for good measure. I ask you how can you go wrong when mixing these styles? You can't, these guys stir the pot up resulting in a very interesting and unique sonic brew which is highly palatable to even to the most discerning of eardrums.
The Vincent James Explosion is compromised of Vincent James - Guitars, Keyboards, Vocals, Jerry Sampson - Bass, Vocals & Jim Linsner - Drums, Percussion, this CD is significant because it marked the inclusion of Award Winning bassist Jerry Sampson into The Vincent James Explosion replacing former bassist Tom Zielinski.
This CD features also features some excellent saxophone playing by Eric Crittenden on Track 3, JB's Bounce.
The Vincent James Explosion sound can best be compared to Jeff Beck Jazz/Fusion era, Jimi Hendrix & Stevie Ray Vaughn to name a few.
Track #4 Jialu is a Must Listen to...for any serious guitarists out there, way cool effects going on throughout the instrumental.
Track #2 Into The Light has some impressive tremolo bar/fuzz work.
If you're looking for something new & exciting to listen to pick up a copy of this CD today @ http://www.musiccitybuffalo.com/
