High Horse - Buffalo NY

I recently caught High Horse at a corner bar in Tonawanda, NY and I was pleasantly surprised at the awesome sounds coming from the band. High Horse is a step above your average cover band. The band works very well together to create a great, cohesive, musical sound like a good band should. All the guys seemed to be enjoying themselves and it shined through in the music.

I sought out Pete and the High Horse band after a friend posted an old video of Pete singing live on Facebook. I believe the video has since been taken down.

My goal of going to see Pete was to politely ask him for a CD to post on this blog, never intending to review it.

As far as reviewing the High Horse CD goes I am somewhat biased having known Pete personally for quite a few years now. I agreed to give Pete a honest opinion of Escape From The Glue Factory upon Pete's polite request. 

Before I start the review I have to say that I was very impressed by the live guitar playing of Chuck DeRose. Clint Haycraft played keys, lead guitar and sang backup vocals all very well that night. The entire band sounded great and they closed out the night with a rip roarin' version of In The Light by Led Zeppelin.

OK here we go with the CD review. First up is "The Rider". The Rider is a great, upbeat opening track. The sound is classic rock all the way around, from the drums to the vocals. This song would fit right in on 97 Rock's playlist and nobody would bat an eye. I can picture a big pack of Harley's cruising down the road while I listen to "The Rider". Spectacular keyboard performance on this one.

   "Autumn Girl" is a pure classic rocker. High Horse have the 70's retro sound down pat. This song has a great guitar intro and an excellent farfisa organ track. The vocals provide the perfect, sweet icing on top of the great melodic track. "Clarissa" reminded me of a 70's pop nugget you might hear on AM radio back in the day. Great guitar slides... The vocals on Clarissa highlight Pete's talented, vocal stylings. "Sweet Baby Jane" features Chuck DeRose on guitar. The intro sounds like Stevie Ray and the melodic, lead guitar solo has some Duane Allman sounds sprinkled in. Eli Porter and Chuck crank out some nice, melodic, guitar lines on this rocker. The song tells of Jane and her drug problem. Best line of the song... "By nine'o'clock you're dragging your ass". Next up is "Remiss". I was immediately reminded of the 80's sound upon hearing the intro. Pete manages to change the sound of his voice and his lyrical phrasing to match an 80's style, highlighting his talented vocals. Chuck delivers some pure Fender strat guitar lines on this song trading up with the keyboard solos. "Four Winds" gives the rhythm section of Eli Porter and Sandy Belsky and chance to set a great tempo and really groove together. This song highlights Eli Porter, he is really popping and slapping the bass on this one. "Gone" is the love ballad of the CD. High Horse uses a secret songwriting trick to add even more melody to the song. The band moves up the musical key to give Pete a chance to stretch out on the outro. "Ballad of a Would Be Hero" shows just how well the band works together. Each member contributes a great performance to this "epic" mid-tempo rocker. "Stunner Rumbles" is a jazz fusion/progressive rocker that gives the musicians of High Horse a chance to let loose and "speak" through their instrument of choice. The intro is pure jazz fusion which leads into a melodic figure played by the keys and guitar. Great instrumental! "Earthshine" is a heavy rocker that starts off with some cool, guitar feedback. Pete's talent shows through on another great vocal performance, this High Horse CD is Pete's best recorded work to date. The final track, "The Emperor (Has No Clothes)" is a fun song proving that the High Horse band has a great sense of humor. Pete delivers some funny one liners on this track which also includes a hidden, bonus track.

Jason Myles Goss "Radio Dial" CD review by Cheryl Manzella.

Jason Myles Goss is a up and coming singer/songwriter who recently released a CD called "Radio Dial". Your fave blogger was happy to recieve a review copy. I was even happier when Cheryl Manzella agreed to review this great CD for me.

For those of you out there who don't who Cheryl is, she's Dan the Man's wife. Dan the Man is an accomplished singer/songwriter in the Buffalo N.Y. area. Dan currently sings for "55 Main" and has done many high profile gigs with the bands "City Streets" and "Forever Green".
Needless to say, Dan and Cheryl are both good friends of Joey Tell.
I'd like to Thank Cheryl for submitting her 2nd CD review for this blog.

OK on with the review...
"Into The Night" starts off "Radio Dial". "Into The Night" is a strong, upbeat song. A great song to kick off a music CD with.

The next song, "Heavy" has a sound that is immediately likeable. "Heavy" sounds like it could be right off of the Dire Straits album "Brothers In Arms".

"Lion's Mouth" is a song that tells a story. The music sets up a perfect ambiance and mood for Jason's story telling lyrics.

The 4th song, "Red Letter Man", is a catchy, melodic song that has a country music sound.

"Keep Your Love With Me" is a sweet and touching song. This song tells a story of a love that once was but is no longer. Jason shows his softer, more sensitive side on this track.

"Come Back To Me" is a heartfelt and emotional track.

"Chocolate Croissant" is a very enjoyable song that has a playful, fun loving feel and sound. A great singer/songwriter type of song.

"Dark Dark Winter" is a great sounding song. The music and lyrics have a great flow and feel, blending together to carry this song along very well.

"Black Lights" is a excellent song with great lyrical content. This song is about a boxer who had big dreams but couldn't rise to the occasion when his big opportunity came along.

"Hospital Shirt" is also a very good, well written song. The sound and feel is very melancholy but the lyrics are about a man who is rebelling against a debilitating disease. The subject is stuck in a "hospital shirt" and is desperate to leave it all behind even though he knows he cannot.

COWBOYS OF SCOTLAND

The band started in early 2002, as Bud Redding's recording project. Multi-instrumentalist Redding played guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and sang all of the original songs. After several people heard his music and persuaded him to play live, he began performing as Bud Redding's Shock & Awe. Several people would guest star in Bud's monthly shows, performed at Staples on Allen (now DBGB’s) These guest slots lead to Steven Myers joining the band, in 2006, playing guitar, bass, percussion, and adding some vocals. They began writing songs together, as well as learning each other’s originals... In 2007, they changed the name of the band to COWBOYS OF SCOTLAND...Playing the massive Tribute to Mark Freeland; the band took a Freeland song title and made it their name, as a tribute to their mentor and friend. Joined on stage by performance artist "Z. Mann Zilla", the band rocked the house, setting the stage for a new direction...

The addition of drummer Joe Marciniak led the band down a different path, placing less emphasis on electronic rhythms, and more on a real rock drummer. Performing a wide variety of music and musical styles, and often incorporating video and live art into their shows, Cowboys of Scotland continue to grow an audience in the Buffalo, NY original / underground music scene...

In 2009, the band temporarily added former Veil rockers, Steve and Johnnie Perry to play the Rolling Stones tribute benefit, with the proceeds going to Children's Hospital of Buffalo...The formula added a hard rock element to the band's sound, and they played again with this 5 piece line-up at Music is Art...This MIA show was the premier of the atomic science themed song “1905”, now a live performance favorite.

The 2010 spring schedule also featured a performance at Nietzsche’s, for the annual Mark Freeland tribute. This would mark the 4th performance by the band at a Freeland tribute, this one hi-lighted by a performance of Mark Freeland’s hip-hop classic, “Macaroni & Cheese”. They were joined on stage by legendary Buffalo rapper / funk-master, Nate Schneekloth, whose smooth style fit well with the band’s electro-groove.

After a 2010 summer hiatus while guitarist / bassist Steve Myers toured France, the band has come back with a new lineup... After drummer Marciniak quit the band, the band was lucky to have drummer super-star Bill Moore perform with them for two epic shows. Due to Bill's touring schedule, he was not able to remain a permanent member of COS, and the band has since added veteran indie drummer Damon Madden to handle the drums and percussion...Veteran progressive rock guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Robert Raithel was recruited and agreed to join the band, and has begun blending his “wall-of-sound” and synthesized guitars to the bands ever-evolving mix.

The band is was then in the midst of rehearsing and recording “Original: The Mark Freeland Story”, a multimedia, hour long piece about Buffalo music icon, the late, great, Mark Freeland…

In the summer of 2011, the band performed their epic rock opera entitled
"Original - The Mark Freeland Story" several times in Buffalo. The performances included a special projection / light show, and was filmed for an upcoming DVD release.

The band is currently writing and rehearsing new material, including a song about the "occupy" movements, entitled "Running Out of Time", and writing songs for a new concept piece called "1952"...New drummer, Doug Jones is now with the band, providing the most solid foundation the band has ever had to work with...

Next up is the finals for "Rage on the Stage", Saturday, July 21st, at The Tudor Lounge...tix only 5 bucks...Come root on Cowboys of Scotland...

 August 18th,2012, we will be at Fillagrees at Elmwood and Forest for a special event...the rest of our time we are writing, rehearsing, and getting ready for some recording...Have a great summer and see you soon!

Tracee Perrin, MT Press

Los Angeles native, Tracee Perrin has been exposed to different cultures and ways of living that have influenced and elevated her music, allowing her to breathe refreshing authenticity into each track on her Debut EP "Providence." The EP was live tracked and produced by Daniel Dempsey (Rod Stewart, Chris Duran) and mastered by Mark Chalecki (veteran of Capitol Records with credits for Plain White T's, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pat Benatar), it explores socially conscious themes in an honest yet still hopeful and concise way. Her skills as a songwriter strip back just enough veneer to make her music beyond genuine and she is an expert at embracing her emotions, channeling them through unabashed sentiment.

The stand-out title track "Providence," a song about escaping what binds you to your past for the freedom of self-expression, the drums roll like a train over steel tracks as her lyrics carry you through the story. Mixed with the languidly fun strum of the guitar, she paints a whimsical picture of what it's like to let go, using her soaring vocals to speak fearlessly, "I am not running away/ I'm just looking for a change." The fluidity of the mix and the tale behind the story makes the listener want to continue the journey with her. With "Prince of Pride" her vocals float effortlessly, with beautifully weary resignation, backed by a barroom piano and a heartbreaking string accompaniment filling the space in the silence that's left. A song in which you can feel the sense of urgency for change in the world and Perrin's heart is emblazoned boldly in the gentle rifts and soaring heights of her voice. On "One Cry", a bittersweet ballad that points out the unforgivable flaws in a relationship, Perrin remains the epitome of dignity and grace, despite a loss of hope in the lesson of love. With a lush and tender vocal spread over a hollow and sparse piano chord progression, her lyrics are heartbreakingly truthful, showing her skills as talented and honest songwriter. Her music stays away from any surface symbolism, instead focusing on the honesty in the lyrics, building an undeniable EP of substance mingled with hopefulness and consistently strong material.

Fans of the soulful qualities of Sara Bareilles, Jewel, and Joss Stone will appreciate the release of Tracee Perrin's debut album "Providence."

Empire Of One, MT Press
